Seminar Overview Union Catalog of Rare Books Database Establishment Seminar

The Chinese University of Hong Kong held the "Cooperative Planning Conference for the Cross-straits Five-region Chinese-language Database" in November 1999. This event recommended that a "Cross-straits Five-region Chinese Literature Resources Sharing Coordination Committee" be established and organize three working groups. National Central Library is in charge of one of these working groups – the "Union Catalog of Rare Books Database" working group – which is why we are holding this seminar.

We held the first "Union Catalog of Rare Books and Relevant Tasks Seminar" in Taipei in late May 2000. Representatives of partner libraries in Taiwan and six organizations in China with famous collections of rare books, along with experts and specialists, were invited to this event to share their experiences. Held in Peikang, the June 2000 "First Chinese Literature Resources Sharing and Cooperation Conference" discussed National Central Library 's "Union Catalog of Rare Books Database" as a proposed item of cooperation. We hope that a Chinese-language rare book database will be able to provide copious information on rare books in Chinese to ordinary users around the world via the Internet.

Accordingly, National Central Library has been holding regular sessions of the "Union Catalog of Rare Books Database Establishment Seminar" in Taipei to ensure that this cooperative effort proceeds smoothly. Besides inviting representatives of partner libraries in Taiwan and organizations with rare book collections in Macao, Hong Kong, and China, we also plan to ask important rare book collecting organizations in North America, East Asia, and Europe to send representatives in the future. We hope that by sharing experience and engaging in mutual discussion, we can make the " Union Catalog of Chinese Rare Books" a reality.
